There are many people who seem to be in a constant state of struggle with their home organization. No matter where you look, there seems to be clutter. There are also plenty of people who manage to keep the inside of their house clean and tidy at the expense of giving up their garage space. The garage, with its wide open space, is an attractive place to keep things out of the way. Unfortunately, this eventually catches up with homeowners. Before they know it, there is so much clutter covering the garage floor that they can no longer use the space for housing their vehicles. This is a problem, but it can be handled in much the same way as one would go about organizing the inside of their home.
The key to making the most of the space in your garage is to be organized. This is particularly challenging because most of the time, the garage does not come equipped with all of the storage space that is found inside the house. Inside most people's homes, there are plenty of closets and cabinet spaces available for easy storage. These are usually already present when the house is bought, so not much thought is ever given to it. The garage, however, is usually just one large room. Many times there are no shelves, closets, or even flat surfaces for setting things upon. People in a hurry to find someplace to put extra items from inside the house start setting things on the floor. Eventually, they start stacking things. After a while, they have a cluttered, unusable space. The solution of course is simple. We need to use the same strategies that we do in other rooms. You simply bring in cabinets, benches and other helpful garage furnishings.
Large, metal cabinets are a popular choice for garage storage. These are sturdy and can be moved about to wherever they need to be in the garage. Usually these will come equipped with built in shelves. These are ideal for storing small items that you would like to keep out of sight. Things like spray paint cans, oil for the car, and cleaning products can be stored in mass quantities without anyone ever seeing them. For a less expensive alternative, you might want to look for, or build large wooden cabinets.
Smaller cabinet spaces are also extremely useful in the garage. Usually these will have to be mounted to the wall of the garage. If you are handy, you can install them yourself, but be certain that they are properly mounted. They will end up bearing quite a bit of weight after a while. Again, you can build these yourself if you have that level of skill, but these are also sold as units. Depending on where you purchase them, you may be able to swing a deal to have them installed for an additional cost.
If you enjoy puttering about in the garage, you might consider getting yourself a work bench. These are great for working on home projects that have the potential to get messy. In addition, many of the work benches that are sold for home use also include one or two shelves underneath the work surface. This, of course, will add even more additional space for you to get the clutter off of the garage floor. Work benches come in a wide variety of sizes and styles. The more extravagant ones can be rather costly. You can sometimes find these for much better prices at estate sales. Be aware however that a previously owned unit will almost certainly show signs of wear and tear that might include stains from spills.
Getting your garage organized may cost a bit of money, but most people are very happy to get all of that space back. Once the garage is organized again, everyone in the family must make a concerted effort to never let it get cluttered again. By looking for ways to maximize the available space in the garage, you can easily manage to keep a well organized home.
