Did you know that a clean and organized garage not only provides the best way to use your space but it also increases the value of your home? Here are some tips to help you maintain a clean and organized garage space.
First think about how your garage is used. There is a reason why you need or want to clean up and organize your garage. In order to achieve your goal you need to decide how it needs to be organized in order for you to use the space most efficiently.
There are several reasons why you may want to keep your garage neat and organized. You can make use of the added storage space, create a home workshop, use it to store another vehicle or even provide another place for the kids to play.
Getting started on cleaning up a messy garage sometimes seems like an insurmountable task. Make sure you are giving yourself enough time to do the job right the first time and don't try to rush. The garage is probably one of the largest rooms you have and it will take time to organize it. Most garages require at least a full day if not more.
Take it step-by-step
Break down your efforts into small tasks instead of just diving in head first. Make goals for each portion of cleaning and organizing each area and take a gradual approach. This will help you to see your accomplishments while you work so you don't become discouraged and give up.
Step One: Remove everything from the garage
In most cases it is best to just empty the space, sweep it out and start with a fresh clean slate. Put everything in the driveway or on the lawn in organized clusters so you can see what you actually have and start forming a plan on how or where you want to store everything.
Put Items In One Of These Four Groups
Save: This is what goes back in, so think carefully. If you don't need it and haven't used it in years consider if it can go into one of your other piles.
Donate: Anything still in good working condition can be donated. From clothing to furniture to appliances. Some charities are even willing to come pick up large donations from you.
Recycle: Set up recycle bins and recycle what you can. Glass, cans, tin, plastics and paper can all be recycled so find out where your nearest recycling center is.
Throw out: While most items will fit into garbage cans or bins, some things may need you to call for some disposal help. If you have a lot of garbage or some very large garbage you can rent a large dumpster for the task.
Cleaning out your garage is a significant but rewarding task. You will thank yourself every time you get to enjoy your nice, new space.
Organizing your garage can make a big difference in the functionality and feel of your home. This is a big space and when used well you may be surprised what you can do with it. For more tips on how to organize this space visit: http://whiteshelf.org/simple-garage-organization-ideas/
