One Sunday morning I was about to once again try and rearrange all of our family treasures so that we can actually find what we need in that pile in the corner. As well, I thought that making it possible to park the car without damaging it or one of our bikes might also be a good idea. Being a fan of the internet, I figured that I might just have a look for some proper storage arrangements rather than simply shift stuff around like I've done in the past.
Well... what I had discovered was a whole world of garage storage for every occasion you can think off and some that you wouldn't even consider. This was going to transform my life! Well, not really, but I did develop an interest in how a little planning and using the right types of storage can truly make you proud of your garage space and the fantastic ways it can be used for storage.
How to get started and take action!
When it comes to bringing order to their garage, most people are full of great ideas but are reluctant to actually get in there and do it! If you are anything like me, the problem is in not knowing where to start and this is precisely what I want to talk about next.
The first thing you need to do is simply sort everything into two basic groups,- stuff you need and the stuff you don't. This is your chance to get rid of what you no longer need and make room for something you have always wanted.
The next step is to look at the types of storage available and sort your stuff accordingly.
Shelving cabinets or racks are typically free standing units that are perfect for small to medium size items that need to have easy access and can be placed on top of one another. Such items may include storage boxes, hobby stuff, various tools, gardening gear, books and magazines, wine bottles and the like. In fact once you start looking at what is available in shelving units, you might be surprised at the scope and choice to suit any situation.
In choosing the right type of shelving, some of the important considerations are the Size (height X width X depth), suitability of the material shelving unit is made out of and whether the shelving can be affixed to a wall (if desired) or must be used as a freestanding unit with the benefit of being movable, if necessary. Some shelving cabinets are on wheels for that very reason.
Storage systems offer a more comprehensive solution and are often a combination of Shelving Units, Cabinets with Doors, Drawer Units, Work Benches and other components to suit your specific storage needs. Such systems often come in a kit form and are available in a choice of configurations and sizes.
While there are distinct advantages in planning and setting up your garage storage using individually bought components, there are storage systems that offer the level of flexibility and quality of construction that makes them an easy solution for your entire storage needs. In addition, buying a storage system is often far more economical than getting these components individually
Don't forget also that even though such systems are designed as a comprehensive solution, you might find that a system solves 80% of your needs and can always add the particular components it lacks. A good example of that is when you need some bike storage which is not usually a part of most storage systems, however is readily available as an ad-on component.
All in all, I'd recommend having a close look at these systems as they offer an excellent comprehensive solution at a good price that will take care of the majority of your storage needs.
Wall racks provide you with a variety of storage choices that are all designed to be mounted to a wall, as the name would imply. While there are no hard and fast rules to the types of items that must be stored in a particular types of storage, wall mounted storage lends itself particularly well to certain types of things you may want to store in your garage.
These include tool organizers, steel hooks and pegs for hanging stuff, shelving racks, broom and mop holders, wall mounted racks for small parts, ironing board holders, garden tools and even skate board racks. Of course this list is far from comprehensive, but it should give you a fair idea of the types of things you might look at storing using the various wall racks.
The other huge advantage of using garage walls for storage is the overall area they offer for organizing and putting things away without intruding excessively into your main garage area. Wall storage is often used to complement shelving units and other storage systems.
CEILING MOUNTED STORAGE
If you thought that wall racks offered a clever solution to making the most of your garage space for storage, the ceiling mounted storage racks really take this idea to an entirely different level. Literally!
Obviously, ceiling mounted storage will only work in spaces with relatively high ceilings, but if you are fortunate enough to have the height for ceiling storage, you are lucky indeed! In this short guide, it's difficult to go into the specific details of the types of shelving, racking and just general storage units that are available for attaching to the ceiling. I'd like you to look at it this way... it is very much like adding an instant attic to your garage!
Unlike a traditional attic though, ceiling mounted storage is far cheaper to attain, is often more versatile and can be installed, modified and added to over a period of time and to suit your specific and changing requirements.
Items that can be stored mounted to a ceiling include such diverse things as Surf Boards and Canoes, Bikes and heavy storage boxes full of your Books, old LP Record collections years of Magazine subscriptions. If your garage has the height, this type of storage is golden!
Utility racks are storage devices with a very specific and often narrow purpose, which of course what makes them so wonderfully useful. There are racks for storing your tools in the corner of a room, racks to store lumber, racks for wall mounted magazine storage, racks for storing dishes, mobile racks to store garden tools, wrench organizers, racks to store various musical instruments and wall mounted kayak racks.
I think you get the picture! Basically, if you have an item or items that require purpose made storage, it is a safe bet that there is a storage solution built precisely to do what you want. Incredibly, there is often a choice between a number of such products!
BIKE RACKS & STANDS
Even though bike racks fall into the general category of utility racks, there is such multitude of the types, styles and sizes of bike racks and bike stands available that they deserve a category of their own.
There are wall mounted bike racks, ceiling mounted bike racks, free standing bike stands and bike parking racks. There are racks and stands to house a single bike as well as a number of bikes. There are also racks of various types and sizes to house the various bike accessories.
As friend of mine once put it to me after he saw my garage bike arrangement, you'd almost want to take up the bike riding just to have the excuse to get all the cool bike storage gear!
SKI STORAGE RACKS
Ski storage racks are similar to the bike storage in that they deserve section of their own. Just like the garage storage available for bikes, the number and type of solutions available for ski storage is truly mind boggling. Of course it's not only for snow skis, because excellent storage racks are available for snow boards, water skis and even skate boards.
Unfortunately I don't ski, but having researched all the available storage options, I might just be tempted to take it up.
As I said earlier, there is indeed a whole world of storage choices out there for your garage or your shed and these are available to suit every possible situation or specific need that you may have. The difficulty is in trawling through all that is available and picking out the very best products.
